Civil War Enactment

There was a Civil War enactment going on in one section of the theme park. I would've liked to have stayed and watched it longer, but it was raining and the kids wanted to do other things.

Corn Maze

We took the teenagers to a corn maze last Friday. Before you even ask. . . . YES! We got lost! We weren't able to get a babysitter that day, so the whole crew came along.

Brooke rode with Daddy the whole time. Check out her cute boots.

Finally!

Finally! One of the older boys remembered to ask Dad if they could pump the gas. I mentioned in a previous post that David had made the rule that whoever asks first, gets to help pump the gas. Saturday we pulled into the gas station and Cole was the first one to ask. Up until this point, Logan has been the only one to remember, so it was quite momentous and exciting for Cole to be the one that was allowed to get out of the van and help. I found it humorous that Trevor didn't even complain about it. . . . he was just so happy that somebody besides Logan was finally pumping the gas!

Science Class

I love homeschooling! I didn't know that I would, but I truly enjoy teaching my Cole-Boy. He is picking things up so quickly and blending letters together already. One of the things I love about homeschooling is the freedom to do projects outside of the curriculum. I had been thinking it would be great for Cole (and the rest of us!) to see a butterfly emerge from a cocoon. I wasn't really sure how to go about this experiment, but God knew, and he worked it out beautifully for us.

As it turns out, we had a family over for dinner Sunday afternoon. They have a daughter who is 7. She had collected 16 caterpillars which had cocooned over the past few days. They actually had 16 cocoons hanging around their house! Later that afternoon her dad came back to our house and brought us a cocoon and a pumpkin from their garden. I was so excited! We hung our cocoon underneath a kitchen cupboard and waited for the transformation.

The cocoon was beautiful! It was green and looked pearly. There were also gold "stitches" in the cocoon. I'm still looking that up online, but it was very beautiful. I wish I could've gotten better photos, but it was dark under the cabinets.

We finally started to see a wing through the cocoon.

Here he is hanging out to dry! It amazes me that those beautiful, big wings fit inside that little shell.

The clear cocoon after he came out:

Logan had no trouble picking up the butterfly.

When I came downstairs this morning, the boys had laid out an animal book on the kitchen floor near the butterfly. You can see the monarch in the picture. I guess they were trying to show our real butterfly what he was supposed to look like! :) They also tried to feed him. . . . . a Cheerio!

Cole did NOT want to hold the butterfly at first! Crazy boy! He finally picked it up.

Finally, our butterfly was able to go outside. I put him near my petunias, which are still struggling along in this cold weather. It's been a couple of hours, and he still hasn't left our home. Maybe the boys will get their wish to have a pet butterfly after all!

Birthday Pictures

I think Trevor had a fantastic 8th birthday. His big gift was a bicycle from his parents, grandparents and uncle. Other than that he mostly got clothes. However, I did something different for him this year. Usually I take the birthday money that he gets in the mail and spend it for him. This year I let him have his spending money, and we went to Toys R Us on his birthday. Yes, it did take us a while, but he finally ended up buying a really neat Transformer. Later we went to the Dollar Tree and he bought a few things there as well.

The bike was waiting for him in the living room that morning.

Trevor earned 50 tokens from his Sunday School teacher last month. She gives them a good-sized portion of verses to memorize monthly and he always does a good job. And what birthday is complete without a trip to Chuck E. Cheese?

Finally it was cake time! I asked Trevor what kind of cake he would like for his birthday this year. He thought for a few seconds and said, "I'd like an ice cream cake. Do you know why?" (Of course I don't know why, because I don't think it gets better than a fudge cake, with fudge frosting on top!) He told me he was going to choose an ice cream cake because Cole doesn't like cake very much. After that selfless gesture, I figured I'd get him an ice cream cake for sure. Those things are pretty spendy, so I got on the internet and found some recipes and concocted my own little cake. I think it turned out well and was a big hit!

There is an Oreo cookie crust, with two different kinds of ice cream, and fudge and Kit Kats in the middle.

E-I-G-H-T

Trevor is eight years old today! It hard to believe that it's been 8 years since God gave him to us. I was doing a bit of reminiscing on Trevor's birth and his first few months of life. Of course he is special because he is our first born. There's something special about bringing home that first baby. I remember him being born at 7:51 in the morning after a long night of labor. I remember what a good baby he was for us.

Trevor is going through a "spelling phase" right now. It's pretty cute and very enjoyable! Today I listened as he told my dad on the phone that he was "E-i-g-h-t today." At the dinner table he thanks me for the "F-o-o-d," and he was so excited to get a new "B-i-k-e" as well. I just love it!

Trevor is a very thankful person! Many times today he thanked us for his gifts, his meals, his outings, etc. . . . While he was on the phone with my sister he whispered to me, "What did they give me?" I told him and he promptly thanked her for the gift. I didn't even have to tell him to be thankful, he is just that kind of person. I'm so glad about that because thankfulness is a command in the Bible, and it's one that Trevor does so well.

This week Trevor got four 100%'s on the tests that he took! He is doing well in school and is a good Scripture memorizer too. We are just thankful that God gave him to us for the short time we are on earth. What a blessing!

The Park

We've been to a couple of parks lately. We always seem to make it around dusk time, so I don't get very good pictures of the boys playing. But they've been having a good time, so I guess that's more important than good pictures!
